Hello and sorry

To all loyal readers.
I'm sorry to say because of my jam packed schedule, I couldn't find any time to finish this week novel. That's why instead, my friend had suggested me posting tips in writing when I showed her one where I give suggestion to another friend. Because I'm still inexperience, it might not be much but enjoy this [9 Tips of Writing] until the next chapter.

1. Preserve; the hardest thing about writing is getting the idea yet you're too tired or lazy to write.

2. Write at every idle time, why I was able to post in time is because I write whenever there's nothing to do, even if it's only 5 minutes or just writing your future idea, it helps a lot.

3. Stealing is good! okay it's not that good, but the stealing I'm talking is not plagiarism. It's using other ideas and making your own, similar to fan fiction or artist covering another artist's songs in their own unique way. The challenge is to make it original as possible with other's idea as inspiration. Though after I read it again, there are some part in my story that wasn't original enough since I'm out of ideas, I plan to revise it in the future.

4. The other challenge in writing is connecting one idea with the other. If it's me, first I write the most important scene of the story, then I just write as many scenario as possible and use the the best story. Afterward don't post it yet, wait for at least 3 days before you read it again to find mistakes in words(which I usually suck at) or the story itself. What you need to be careful is making sure the story makes sense. No matter how interesting the story, if it's too absurd or doesn't make sense then readers might lose interest. You need to make sure there's no loose ends in the story because the more realistic it is, the more easy it is to relate with the characters.

5. If you're writing a fiction, you need to make sure the readers know how your world works, in other word the setting. For me, this is one of the difficult part. For example when I started this story, imagining a world with esper, I asked myself. How were they born? How does the people react? What kind of education system use on them? Are they minority or majority? How do they divide their skill or rank? What kind of test do they use to find if they are esper? You need to ask yourself as many question as possible and design the setting of your world.

6. Characters aren't perfect. I think you've seen many reincarnated story where the MC became OP. honestly it might be interesting at first, but it became boring in the long run. If the MC is too perfect then there won't be much room for s/he to grow. Don't neglect the support chara or antagonist as well. You don't need to be afraid if they overshadow the MC, you just need to make the MC better as the story goes along.

7. Story development; you need to know what part of the story you'll be developing and part of the story you'll be focusing, It could be about the drama between people, or the mystery that incite curiosity, it could be about how the character use effort to achieve his/her goal. My story focused how Claudia will grow and adapt while being stuck in the present and past.

8. Grasp your character's character. I recommend if you keep a note of your character's description in feature and set of mind. There are some stories where I found most of the character had similar mind set, it'd be more interesting if you show the different characters approaching a problem.

9. The ending is important. The process itself is good and fun, but having an unexpected and satisfying ending is hard. Because you only have three choices.

  • Good ending.
  • Bad ending.
  • Sad ending. (I think sad ending could be seen good or bad depending on the point of view but it still makes you sad.)
I can't really find any other ending than that, but there's a loose ending where the story is over but still many question remains but I don't think of that as a legit ending. Usually you would find the ending predictable in most story, especially when you reach a climax of a novel, which is why I feel some novels though have great story, the ending was either too predictable or just plain suck, leaving a bad aftertaste. The same as eating a cake but your tea became bitter afterward. That's why never stop arranging your ending. Whether you want it good or bad ending, make it something satisfying for th reader so when they close the book they would sigh and said 'that was fun'
For now that's all, hope it helps to you book lovers.

Chapter 59: The Forgotten Charm

When I opened the door, I had steel my heart for whatever is waiting for me on the other side. Never in my wildest dream thought they would go all the trouble of making a surprise birthday party for me. Strains of color papers and confetti covered my head. I was shock in more ways than one.
I blinked a few times before I could process the situation I arrive in. Dean and Kenny  was holding the party crackers Alvin created sparks in the air that said 'Happy Birthday'  plants was flowing out of four pots, entwined with each other and make a wooded tree table. There was a plain chocolate coated cake, with nine candles sitting on top. Surrounding it was the rest of the S Class yet I couldn't spot Foax until I saw a glimpse of his shadow standing at the edge of the rooftop, watching over us from afar. The area was covered with balloons tied up, creating a private room with the balloons as the walls. "Well don't just stand there, go and cut the cake or we can't eat it." Kenny stretched his arm and pushed me from behind toward the table.
My feet was forced to strut toward the table, watching the small fire flickering on the candles. Thankfully for these past years, I was able to control my emotion better when it comes to fire, there's also the fact that my job was to blow away fire which I'm happy to do at any time.
After I blew it, the rest of them clap and urge me to give out the cake. Rather than doing that, I stared at them for awhile before I could ask what was on my mind. "Why are you doing this, didn't you guys hate me?"
"Hate you? Don't be silly, we act like that toward everyone" answered Kenny.
"The way you spoke up to that teacher the other day, that was hella cool!" Added Alvin.
             "B...brave!" Said Morra with difficulty.
Again I blinked a few times from their answer, I never thought my actions were something to be proud of, I only stated the facts since his actions were wrong. Carol came up to my side while tucking my coat, she was looking aside with her face flushed red and her hand behind her back. "Tha…thank you…for helping me that day" she said while she gave me my present from her. I felt my eyes bulging out seeing her being polite. It almost sent shiver on my back.
In then end, I muster a smile and received the present with gratitude. "I'll take good care of it" I respond. The others also lined up and each prepare a present for me. My heart flutters and joy was coursing through my body. It's the first time anyone gave me a bundle of presents other than from my family or my best friends. I swear in my heart I plan to cherish ever single one of them.
They had me sit at the wooden tree chair Morra also made, only it was bigger and more elaborate like a throne. I know they're being nice to me because of my birthday, but this is getting embarrassing. They all began to ask me practically about everything they need to know about me. About my sisters who were famous, the kind of life I had at home, how I shouldn't worry too much about the bullies at school.  All of them were like a different person, or rather, they began to reveal what they were like.
             Having fun?
My heart jumped from the sudden voice at my head, I look to my side and I saw Foax, crossing his arms and was smiling at me. "Yes I am, I kept wandering why you want me here, never thought it'd be this. Did you plan it?"
The moment I thought they planned all this for me, my heart was touched and the warmth knowing they decided to accept me seeps inside.
Did you tell anyone about what happened yesterday? The smile on my face froze and the surrounding laughter was cut off from my ear. My memory recalled the event and I shuddered. No, I didn't. I respond in my thoughts.
Good, the kids here are suffering enough being isolated from people. I don't want them thinking they are what people say because more started talking from their back.
Then why did you do that? There were other way to handle the situation like calling the adults. Why risk yourself and the others?
Foax turns to look at me with subtle eyes. He then turned back toward his friends, and I instinctively follow. Alvin never wanted his ability, there was a time in the hospital that he accidentally discharge electricity, causing a lot of machines malfunctioning, and causing a lot of death as well. Levy, you know that she has the alice in wonderland syndrome, poor girl, almost made all her previous classmates  lost their mind from her illusions and she still hasn't realize it. Then there's also Dean, have you heard his story?
I nod at his question, then I tuck oh his shirt so he'd turn to look at me. "What's your story?"
My story won't interest you though.
"Let me be the judge of that"
He kept his smile but I noticed it became a bit forced. .
             "What did you hear?"
A buzzing noise suddenly hitting inside my brain. Various unknown voices as if echoing next to my ears.
Creepy little kids, thank goodness they're caged here.
I don't even like kids and I have to babysit these little freaks.
If I can gain make their ability grow more, I'll have a secure life ahed.
What pitiful child, getting this kind of ability.
The voices had made it hard for me to breath. My face began to flush and heart was beating rapidly. It felt something had forced its way inside my head and it wasn't a good feeling.
Do you get it now? No one in this place could be trusted, barely anyone even treat us kids.
"That's not true, you can't let what others thought judge other in prejudice! And making people jump out of a building isn't a convincing way to say they were wrong. You're contradicting yourself!"
Impulsively, I stood up and raise my voice. The mood dampens as they all stop talking. Foax, however just smirk at me as he send me his thoughts.
I'm just doing what I want and what I think it's best for my friends. This class is the only place I have.
There were many thought that floated in my head, but one question came out than the other. "Why aren't you mad at me. All I did is kept disagreeing with you, yet you look amused instead."
Why would I get mad when you did nothing wrong. I can read your thoughts so I know what you say are things you did in best interest for us…and for me. Besides, like I said, in here—
You just need to be yourself.
A sudden chill at the split thought that came to me from his words. "I'm sorry, I'm going home now, thank you for today, I am more than grateful." I dashed toward the door, run down the stairs, and aim toward the gate of the school.
            "Claudia, wait!"
Just when I was so close to escape and faced the voice I knew belong to Carol. "What happened? We spend a lot of time preparing that party and you're going to leave half through it?"
"I'm sorry, I really am, but I absolutely have to go"
Carol's blind stare and knit eyebrows made me a little bit guilty, but then she sigh and whispered something to the pigeon she held in her arms and had it fly away. A moment later, it came back with some friends while carrying a bag full of presents. "If you're going to leave, at least bring your present with you"
I stared at it for a while, but moving on its own, my arm reached out and accepted it. "Carol, can I ask you something?"
            "What?"
My throat felt dry as I talk, but I just had to ask her. "You didn't agree with his method the other day, did you?"
Carol let out a huge sigh, remembering something that seems to be a pain in the ass for her. "J never went that far in the past, his action might not be the best choices, but that's what usually helps and protect us in this class. He also doesn't want anything like what happened with Theresa happen again."
             "Theresa…who's that?"
"……forget I said that, anyway what I want to say is, J isn't a bad person." She said that and left though her last sentence was something I also know well. I look at the bag of present in my arms and looked back up where the kids of S Class is. I remembered my own thought that I hoped wasn't caught by Foax's telepathy. The thought that he might be right.
Just from that one thought, I feared I almost repeat the past if I hadn't slap my mind back on track. What was worse though, was the fact he said the words I wanted to hear the most. It frustrates me that my heart was moved because of that, and I hate how I ran away to avoid being taken in. In the end, I went my back from the school and head home. Ignoring the heavy weight I carried that seems getting heavier as I walk back to the bus stop.

#

Back home.
Technically, at the front of my house. My mind was running around Foax's words that I couldn't get it out. I wished inside that things would at least would get better for my birthday, not thinking my prayer was heard.  I was caught surprised when I found Rick there.
It left my mind blank to meet him so suddenly. He kept sending gaze at my house until he notices me. "Yo, where have you been?"
"Shouldn't I be questioning you, why are you here? I heard you have some errand elsewhere."
Rick shrugged with a small smile, he walked another step so we were only inches apart. I had to lift my head because of the wide height difference and he seemed to feel amused of reminding me of how short I was. "Since it was done I hurried over here to give you this." He searches through his pocket and gave me a small maroon box. There were no wrappers nor ribbon or even any slight decoration. Just a plain small box. "Can I open it now?"
"Go ahead, it's yours after all"
The moment I opened the box, I was positive I had forgot to breath. Inside the box was a cross shape charm necklace, to most people they would definitely think it was cheap pendant that had any worth. There were scrapes and scratches all over its silver color, The only thing worth mentioning would be the  ruby embedded in the middle of the cross.
I didn't quite believe what it might be so as I look at the back, I found nostalgic words that convinced me this necklace was the real deal that it was the same charm necklace my Master once gave to me.
           Aeternus.
           Meaning eternal in Latin.
"Dale has been bugging me that I should at least prepare you a gift, I don't know if you like it, but I bought it at an antique shop I know and thought it might suit you. Though if you don't like it, you could put it away for all I care." Before he could say anything else, I jump into him and hug him tight. "It's perfect, it's the best present I could ever ask for so don't say it wasn't much!" I noticed my voice quivered and tears then started tearing out from my eyes.
I wasn't sure how I felt, that maybe I felt forgiven, to be remembered, as if this necklace is telling me I don't need to blame myself so much. No words could describe how I feel other than immense gratefulness. Master had always been that way, he knew the right words to clear all my doubt, and eased me from pain. He fill out his role as a guardian and a family to me. Even after he reincarnated, it's as if he hadn't forgotten the promise he made. He is here with me, and will always be.
Rick seems to have given in seeing me cry to his chest. So rather than being annoyed or pushing me away, he gently pat my heed and softly said this to me.
            "Happy birthday Claudia"

Chapter 58: Dale's Pleading

".....as you can see, this is the remains of what once used to be the Central Park. It's been 12 days since the attack of the terrorist at the psychic parade, advertising the new  and first Broadway Show that has an esper as the starring role. Police are suspecting that it was the work of an anti-esper terrorist group. The show was also decided to be postponed....."
"2 weeks and they haven't stop repeating the same news, and to think they are still terrorist who rejects esper, don't they have a life to live with instead a life to kill."
"Dear, your doing your bad habit again"
Mother covered her mouth knowing she was turning on her Reporter Switch. Whenever she watches or read a news, it doesn't matter who's listening or not, she would talk(mostly critics) like there's no tomorrow about it and began to get mad at the TV. It's one of her habits to point out every details that are stupid or too conspicuous. In my honest opinion, with that personality she could be a great politician. Too bad she's only a housewife now.
"I'm sorry Claudia, even though today is supposed to be special day for you"
"It's alright mother, I think stopping you would be the same as telling you not to breath."
"Oh you know me so well"
After having our late breakfast together, we were cleaning up the living room from all the scraps of confetti and decoration leftover.
"It's too bad Eric and Loranne couldn't come here, I'm sure they regret it as well" said mother. Since they already texted me, it doesn't matter if they didn't come because I know it would be asking too much. Even so, I can't help but wanting to meet them.
"When will you leave to meet your friends?"
I look at the time that showed it's now 11:25 A.M and Foax asked me to come by the school at 3 P.M. "There's still time, so we can go out together if you want to."
"Shouldn't it be us asking where you want to go?"
"Even if you say that, I don't have anywhere particular in mind." When I realized what I said, I tried stopping myself and raise my hand on my mouth, but it was too late. My parents eye were shining and they immediately took out their phone, browsing places they themselves wanted to go. This will always happen if they ask where we want to go and didn't know where, they ended up dragging us to boring places.
"Now look what you've done Claudia, are you repeating that Christmas memory!" Beth whispered.
             "Sorry, my mouth slip."
"I thought this might happen so I already made plans with some friends, so have fun the two of you" Karen made a smug look as she took her bag and coat  and left. TRAITOR! is what me and Beth both thought as we saw her back leaving.
Before she completely left, she came back and pointed out there was a guest for me. I wasn't expecting any guest so I wondered who it might be.  When I went into the front door, a boy I should've known know what today is to me came with a box wrapped in color paper and a ribbon attached.
             "Hey Claudia, happy birthday!"
"……I never expected that you'd come Dale"
"You should at least be happy you have a friend coming over to congrats you, here!"
I smiled at him and expressed my gratitude as I say thank you. He gave me his present, and accept it. An idea struck me and had Dale wait for me outside. "Mom, dad, a friend is going to take me out so go have fun with Beth without me." Without letting them have the last word, I took my bag and went off with Dale as fast as I could.
"That's such a shame, I've been wanting to look at that computer convention which has all the newest state of the art technology. Did you know there is a tool that could instantly grow your bald hair, and I'm not exaggerating when I say instantly."
"Honey, we should go to place where they want to go, you really lack understanding with kids, we should go somewhere like the Art Statue Museum"
Claudia....Karen……you'll pay for this. Whispered Beth secretly in her heart.

      #

"Rick didn't come with you?"
"No, he said he had somewhere to go, but he said congrats by the way."
I feel dejected that he didn't come. Even though I wasn't expecting him but I ended up hoping when I met Dale. "Don't feel so down, there's always next year. Also, you had something to ask to me right?"
True, I didn't just drag him to help me escape from my parent's grasp. "Can you tell me more about Foax? And maybe about his relationship with Rick as well"
"I could, but don't you think they wouldn't like it if you poke your nose in this?"
Says the person who pokes at everyone's business, "But you're still going to tell me right, you're not good at keeping quiet"
Dale smile as usual, "you know me well." Without meaning to, out feet had drag us to a near park. I witness the trees began to wither and the cold wind of autumn blew on my face. "It should be obvious from yesterday conversation that Rick was part of the S Class once" without letting Dale realized I had my eyes widen fin surprise, I thought back about yesterday and remembered the part where Rick and Foax was said to be in the same class despite being different year. I mentally scold myself that I didn't notice it sooner. The only class that could let that happen would be the S Class.
"If I recall, Rick has the hypnosis ability, was his really that strong?"  Dale began to look away and was mumbling about something when I asked. "Yeah that's right hahaha, Rick is really special after all" I was confused at his weird response, but he succeed on continuing the main subject. "Rick and Foax abilities were exception even in S Class so many expect a lot from them, I'm guessing they feel each other as comrade from being pressured by their perrs. Foax doesn't have a family so Rick also acted like a brother to him and that's why they were close enough that I would even think there's nothing that could separate them."
             "What changed them?"
"You're a curious little girl today, what makes you want to know them that much"
I stop my feet as I thought about my answer. When I found out that Foax was Merlin, my heart was overwhelmed with guilt and feared I would make the same mistake for him as he did for himself. If I had try to learn more of him, to understood him,  then I might be able to change him. If I think about it carefully, all this has nothing to do with Foax, this is just me trying to make amends in someway with Merlin.
             A selfish amend.
"I don't know myself, I feel if I get to know him then I'll know what's on his mind most of the time."
"True, despite him being able to read people's mind, he doesn't show much of what he's thinking. Probably Rick is the only one who could tell that."
Is that so? In the past life, I only knew that they are aware of each other but never seemed to cross path with each other. "For various reason I can't really tell you what happened, but what I can tell is that Foax doesn't trust the institution, to the point that he hates it. Events like few days before aren't always that bad, but he does cause a few problems. Back then it was worse because Rick would join in as well"
"Rick....getting in trouble......I can imagine somehow."
"Simply put, after he stops doing whatever he wants and focus getting his power in track, he was able to choose to stay on S Class or to the Class 5 at out middle school. Foax might have felt betrayed that he let himself do as the adults wants him to do."
"So he's mad that he grew up and got left behind,  is that it?"
"That's a harsh way to put it, but yes."
"Then why does Foax hate the institution so much?"
"Sadly even I don't know, probably the only one who does are Rick and Prof. Dalton. He is the only teacher here who never felt Foax's wrath, they probably have a history together."
"Got it, thank you for telling me all this"
"My pleasure, in exchange can I have my share of question?"
            "Ask away"
Again, we both stop our tracks as Dale looks at me with a change of expression. What scared me though was the fact he wasn't smiling. "Why do you hide your ability?"

#

What ability are you talking about? You must be mistaken, you know my ability is unknown and the adults have been researching it ever since but to no avail.
It was what I wanted to say, but looking at him who was gazing with a serious look that seem to see through me, I didn't know if lying was the right choice. "Oh, I hope you don't answer with a question" he added.
There's really no way to bluff it off now. He knows something. I doubt he knows about my magic because it's not something one would believe, but he is certain I have some sort of ability. Dale waited patiently for my answer, his bearing pressured me for an answer and I had to think of an answer.
"My ability…is not something that could explain by science, so I'm reluctant on people knowing."
"What kind of ability is it?"
"It's…it's a…a…" my words were stuttering and I couldn't get hold of an answer I could answer. So dare I say I did not think when I spontaneously said what I said.
            "I COULD SEE THE DEAD!"
             Ah, crap.
Because of the height difference, I was looking straight at his brown coat. I was much too nervous looking up to his face when I still hear nothing of his response. Which such an obvious lie, of course he'd be speechless. My mouth was kept shut as cold sweat flowed down my face. Please, don't just stand there, say something!
"I see, so that's how it is."
            Eh?
"With that kind of ability, there's no reason not to hide it"
            What?
"Don't worry I won't tell anyone about this, I do like to blab but I'm pretty good at keeping secret."
            "You…believe me?
"What's not to believe?" He answered as he gave off a suspiciously suspicious smile he would always wear. At least it became suspicious to me. Does he believe me, does he not? Damn it, I can't tell at all from his expression!
"Sorry if I made you nervous Claudia, but it's not like I was trying to push you into a corner"
            "Then why did you?"
The smile on his face changed slightly, it was still hard for me to read his face. Was it pity or sadness? I think it's between the two. "Claudia, you're an interesting girl that's why I really like you and hanging out with you is fun. However, because of my position there may be times I couldn't help you when needed or I may have to betray your expectation"
"Dale, why are you telling me all this?"
He looks up at the blue fall sky, his smile was still the same and all though the wind was blowing harder against us, I could hear the sad words he said softly. "I did something wrong to Rick, to someone he cares once and he forgives me for it, he gave me the chance to forgive myself. Sadly, I don't care if I do it again if someone brings harm to him." I blinked a few times when hearing his words. "Why would you think I'll hurt him? My feelings might not be the same as you but I do care about him and I don't want to hurt him."
"You yourself might not, but when someone is different, they'd bring trouble with them whether they like it or not. According to your ability, one day you'll definitely bring trouble. If you ever do, I'm asking you…no, I'm begging you, don't involve Rick in it."
Once again, the smile he had was gone and his tone was colder than what I could have imagine. My heart was stung deeply and yet I wasn't able to cry despite my chest getting crushed in pain. It was because I knew what he meant more than I could imagine. How at that time in the past, being different meant death will chase after you. How what you aren't became what you should be. How I ran from my fate to live as I want but without realizing I drag those precious to me and let them got engulf in misfortune instead.
            In the end nothing changes.
I was never meant to live as myself.

#

I took a deep breath as I got myself to school. It felt strange to go to school on weekends. It's the same feeling when you're being in the wrong place and at the wrong time. Foax specifically told me to the rooftop at this time so there's no need to feel out of place.
            "Ah, you finally came!"
The sudden voice startled me for a moment, but when I turned, I saw Carol at the side of the gate with a stray gray cat at her arms. "You made us wait…is what I'd like to say, but you came right on time." She held my hand without letting me respond and drag me to school. I really like to ask what was going on and why Carol of all people pick me up. I thought Foax wanted to talk privately, but clearly that's not the case.
She drag me into the building and through the stairs in a hurry and even after passing through the 4th floor, she hadn't loose her breath. Out of all days, the elevator had to break today. Seeing her swiftly moving, without thinking I asked her, "Are you really blind?"
She stopped her track at the 6th floor, I covered my mouth when I noticed I may said something out of line. "Sorry, forget I said that."
"What are you being sorry for, this is just one part of my ability. When words came to my ears, I interpreted it with image in my head, that's usually how I was able to understand animals. It's kind of similar to telepathy but the difference is I could do it when hearing words, why do you think I have this fellow dangling in my arms?" She said while showing off her cat. I see, so that's how it is. I thought she was surrounded by animals because she likes them, but it looks like it was because she needed them to see. We continued where we left off and finally got to the stairs toward the rooftop.
"You should be the one to open it"
I gulped nervously, thinking what might lies behind it. However, no matter how wild my imagination is, I can't think off a single thing. "What are you waiting for?" She said irritatingly. Because there was no reason for me to put this on hold. I dared myself opening the door and the first thing that greeted me was the sound of popping, my sight covered with different colors that were floating around. Well isn't this a familiar sight.
            """HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!"""

Chapter 57: Strix

It's all the owl's fault.
If that owl mask man hadn't save me, then I wouldn't possibly be interested in a flyer that had a picture of an owl on it. I followed the map that had directed me to the capital. There must have been something wrong with me that I let myself getting into one of the sorcerer's most hated city. At the middle of the city, there was a huge tent set up and there were crowds pushing in.
"If I'm not mistaken, this is the place."
I was quite dubious at the location, but after coming all the way, I decided to push my way in. Inside, the fire around was brightening the tent as if it was day inside. Crowds were crowding in circle witnessing the exchange between the great animal of the jungle with the title King, and a man with holding a stool on his left hand and a red whip on his right. "Come you mighty beast, show me what you got!" He cried, provoking the lion. On the other side of the ring, you could witness a woman bouncing off a trampoline while going through hoops dangling above. Suddenly, the hoop was lit on fire, while the audience felt distress, the woman went through without a hitch. Above me, there were people flying…correction, they were jumping and maneuvering from one bar to the other, giving a breathless performance. All those performers had one thing in common.
They were all wearing an owl mask.
Coincidence…that can't be right? While all the audience were captivated by each of their performance. I turn my gaze toward the middle of the ring. There, he looked over at his crew from the small stage made for himself. The blue robe that covered him from head to toe gave him a mysterious aura, and the mask he wore reminded me of the man I had met today. No, not just remind him, it WAS him!
"Ladies and gentleman, thank you for watching us until the end, we hope you enjoy our performance." After he said that, the other performers left their performance and stood beside the master of this circus crew. They bowed down and the audience clap and whistle  in joy. I was about to leave myself but then the man looked straight at me. I didn't know how he could notice me from the thick crowd surrounding me, but I knew he was looking at me.
Why I am sure you ask? Because before I could leave this place, a spell was cast on me, unable for me to move from my spot. So as the flow of crowd were going outwards, I stood like something glued me in place as I glare furiously at the people in mask. Slowly but surely, the tent was on the verge of being empty, and when it does, there were only the circus people and me.
"What do you want? Depending on your answer, you'd be grateful if I get by just burning this tent to the ground!"
"Wow, she's feisty, Boss, you like to find people with strong characters, do you?" said the blond boy that had been dangling in the sky before.
"I think she's naive, or maybe stupid. Does she really think she could take us all and leave just like that?" this time, it was the woman with long braided ginger hair, she was wearing a tight suit and her body looked so skinny and tall like a match and was the one who was jumping through hoops of fire.
"If she could, that'd be awesome" said the main in black suit, he tucked his hat, hiding half of his face and threw the stool he was holding aside.
Without retorting or giving any comments. The one being called 'Boss' strolled his way toward me until his mask was only a few inches away from me. The gaze of his gray eyes was round and was observing me every inch of me. It was then than I undo the spell on me and made a sudden kick to his head. As I expect, no one around was expecting me to retaliate that quickly.
            "That girl…she undo Boss's spell?!"
"Could be because he held back his mana."
"Have you ever seen him holding back once?"
They all were quiet for a moment until they answered together the same answer.
            """"No.""""
The Boss staggered back from my kick but that doesn't mean I'd let him recover. I might also fight with his underlings if they think he's in trouble and that would make things a lot harder to escape. Ugh, I'm regretting that I didn't come with Hod along. He's the master of escape.
"She who strikes first wins!" I pulled out my dagger as I conjured a spell, releasing a wave of fire coming out of the scabbard and coiling my dagger into a sword of flame.
"Wait, she's serious in burning us down?!"
You bet I am, not letting a single beat stops me. I poured more mana as fuel and swing it around, creating a flame circling me. I was prepared to escape at any moment when just as fast as it was build, the flame was extinguished. Since the flame was fueled with mana, the only way to extinguished it was with a silver weapon or a spell with a stronger mana.
If I'm not seeing things, then the spell he used was neither wind, water, nor earth.
[Blood, give me the shape of carnage]
The red substance rise from the ground and flowed to his hand with the shape of a sword. I took a step forward, not letting myself pause for even the unexpected. Sorcerers always do have surprises so calmly facing them is one of the basic in fighting against them. It seems Master had his share of fight with his fellow sorcerer.
However, when I tried to parry his red sword, my own sword went through  like cutting a liquid. When I thought I had break it apart, the blood came together and as he twist his body behind me. I tried gaining my stance once more but instead, I face the tip of the red blade of his sword.
It's only been a day and I had to face the end of the sword twice. It is definitely not my lucky day.
"Beautifully done!" He exclaimed. He might have tried to compliment me, but I could only think it was an insult coming from someone who held my life at the moment. "You are Claudia Oriente correct?"
               "You know me?"
"Quite so, words will fly around when a sorcerer is running around freeing greenhorns and the falsely accused. I'm a fan of your effort by the way."
He undid his spell and the sword disappeared from his hand. I turned to him without letting off my suspicious look. "My effort and not my work?"
"Well truth to be told, your work is really pointless from my point view."
"Pointless...." I muttered the words he utter and the flame scorching around my dagger blaze more vigorously. "Whether, it's pointless or not, I let myself decide that"
"The problem is Claudia, I'm sure you think that as well. Haven't you ever thought after fighting countless of soldiers and saving countless of lives, haven't you thought 'when will it end?'" Hearing his words, I blushed. I felt my face getting hot from embarrassment when my thoughts were readable to others. "No matter how many you free our fellow sorcerer, what you do will not solve the problem itself. While you are freeing 5-10 people, the country is killing 80-100 sorcerers, including the wrongly accused. It is no different in treating the symptoms but not the disease."
No words came out from me as I listen to him. It frustrates me that he was blatantly telling me that my effort is being wasted, that there was never a point in me fighting for what I think it's right for me. "Don't misunderstand, I never said you were wasting your effort, but what I do want to say is that you're putting your effort in the wrong place."
"Then do you know how my power could be use to treat this 'disease' you're talking about"
The masked man smiled, as if he was waiting for that exact words coming from my mouth. "I'm glad you ask," he pulled out a piece of paper and had it float toward my hand. "Come at the exact time and place written there, and we will show you how we could change our world."
I look at the paper suspiciously and was hesitating to throw it away. Who would follow the words of someone who is 100% suspicious from top to bottom. Plus, he's wearing a mask, who would believe in someone who hides his own face.
And yet, I couldn't throw it away.
            "Who are you people?"
I look up from the paper to him, but he was already standing beside his comrades. "You can call us, The Strix"
            "Strix…you mean the owl"
"Owl is the symbol of wisdom, people call us witches as it represent us as chaos and misfortune, but ideally we are only people who seek knowledge and the truth of the world."
"Our powers is not a curse, and we certainly are not devils. It is a gift to bring prosper to people, our existence is much more noble than anyone could imagine." He talks as he walk closer to me, he held my hand and I didn't push him from me, because he looks at me with eyes pleading to me, and said the words I had never thought anyone would say to me.
           "Claudia, we need you"

Chapter 56: A Past Relationship

Afternoon class went on enough to bore me. Maybe it was because mental age help me on being a quick learner. I'm still 8 years old and my knowledge could rival those in Junior High School.
What happened after Foax somehow 'made' Prof. Lockwood jumped from the second floor. Because it happened around their building, the adults of course hid the fact from the public. Prof. Lockwood wasn't injured fatally but he resigned soon afterward, he also he didn't even know why he jump. However, afterward Foax had disappeared. I asked where he was with the others and it seemed the adults were punishing him, but he'll be back soon enough is what they answered. I'm worried what kind of punishment he's been given but I don't think it's bad enough that he'd felt threaten since he does however he pleases.
"Oh, let me remind you that next Monday you'll be given a new type of bracelet as your psychic badge, so please don't be absent!"
I turned to my side and beside me was an unfamiliar kid I barely remember. It used to be Eric who always sat beside me, but now that I need someone to talk to, I feel a little helpless. When lunch break came up, even when my thoughts were in lost, my feet drag itself at the back of the school. There was one part in my heart hoping I could see the two of them again. I wonder what's happening to me today, I felt unusually.....lonely.
I turn from the corner, expecting myself eating alone when...
"Oh Claudia, we haven't seen you for a while. Are you up to anything strange perhaps?"
"Yo Claudia, how have you been?"
The one who greeted me at the usual spot were Dale and Rick. They both were eating.....on the tree!
"What are you doing, isn't that dangerous?!"
"Isn't more exciting eating here, don't you think so too Rick?"
"Not really, I just feel like eating here."
"You're such a bore Rick, hey Claudia, why don't you join us!"
I was surprise to see the two of them there and even hanging out on tree. It was one thing if they ate on the nearest branch, but they're eating at the middle branch of the tree which was around 15 feet from the ground.
"No thanks, I'm not good at climbing trees"
"Then we'll come down then" the two of them swiftly came down without breaking a sweat. They didn't need to come down just for me, but I didn't want to eat alone either so I kept quiet in the end, hiding the joy to have them here. "So what's your problem today?"
For a second, my face flashed into various expression. How on earth could he tell? Was my face that easy to read? "If you have a problem, the two of us are all ears you know" I made wry smile and I do want to talk to them, but now that I know I can, should I even tell though? Feeling hesitant, I ended up eating in silent with the two watching over me. Now I'd feel bad if I don't tell them.
"Do you two know J Foax from S Class?"
Both of them looked at each other, giving out meaningful look. I made a hunch that the two of them knew him and grasp the trouble I'm in. "Why? Did he do something to you?"
"No, I'm just wondering what kind of ability does he have, can you two tell me?"
Dale was having trouble how to answer me and was rolling his eyes everywhere, it was Rick who answered me, "Je-I meant Foax originally has the telepathy and we were in the same class at the start, then somehow he started to have mind control"
"Mind control, is that different with hypnosis?"
"It is, you can control someone with hypnosis by messing with the brain's perception, making them do things without question ask. With someone with weak will then they won't even notice they were hypnotized."
"On the other hand, mind control is scarier. You only need to tell them what you want or what you need and you could make them do things that they have no control over. Like hypnosis, it's hard to know when someone use it on you, and Foax ability is more formidable combined with his Telepathy."
I was lost deep in thought hearing his answer. "Do you personally know Foax?" I asked but the two were silent. I'm guessing they have no comments, but somehow I smiled knowing they don't want to lie to me instead. "I'll change my question, can you two tell me everything what you know about Foax or what kind of relationship he has with his classmates?"
If you want to know me that much, you could've just ask me.
I turned to my side and saw Foax standing ahead of us. I felt guilty looking at his furious expression, but then I realized he wasn't looking at me. He was looking  at Dale and Rick.
Long time no see, even though we're in the same school, being in different buildings really makes meeting each other harder
There was an obvious tone of sarcasm and disgust mix into it. At least I know these three aren't exactly friends.
Is what I thought but then I look at the two beside me. Unlike Foax who had malice in his eyes, Rick and Dale looks at him with pity but had an irritated look as well. Exactly what kind of history do they have? "Should I ask what kind of relationship you guys have?"
             "Acquaintance"
              Just acquaintance
"He's a former classmate and Rick's best friend. They're having a fight now but they'll make up soon enough if they stop being stubborn"
There was a dangerous glare from the two toward Dale. As always, his mouth runs without fear. I looked back and forth between Rick and Foax. They felt awkward from my gaze so while Rick looks away, Foax left while leaving a message in my head.
Tomorrow, come to the rooftop alone

Chapter 55: The Owl

How I was able to meet Merlin, started with an ambush.
It was right before the sun had set, the sun dyed my surrounding red and orange. I was in wait for a carriage filled with sorcerers and those wrongly convicted. I hold on to my dagger tightly and feel its hard cold metal against my forehead. Before I knew it, it became a ritual whenever I came out like this.
Calm down, you've done this many times.
When the carriage was visible, I focused solely on it. [Earth, give my enemy no path to take]
The earth slightly shook, giving the horse a scare. Rocks arises from the ground surrounding the carriage, giving panic to the driver and horses. Just as they try to control the situation, I slip out from the trees and knocked out one of the driver. The guards that came to respond the situation was about to attack when the horses block their way and I had disappeared from their sight.
Little did they know I had sneak behind their back, and struck them unconscious. They were more that started to attack me, I turned a perfect 180 degree, I blocked one sword with the dagger and the other stop by grabbing the attacker's wrist. I parry the sword and twist the arm of my attacker. I dislocated his wrist in the process and kick him toward his comrade. I took his sword away and stab the two together by the shoulder.
The horses were still in uproar. I came to them and sooth them with a touch filled with mana. The horse realized my intention and calmed down from a few moments. I looked around and thought that there were something off. There was only one driver and three guards. No matter how you look at it it's too little.
            "It couldn't be...."
In response to my thoughts, the carriage was kicked open and soldiers surrounded me. I see, it was a trap. "So this is the rumored witch who's been causing trouble. I always wondered what kind of person it would be, but to think it was a little girl like you, our officer surely has fallen."
"Don't call me 'little girl' I'm 16 years old!!" I slap the horse and had it run away through the gaps of the rocks. I took the sword in my hand, and ready my stance. There were 15 trained soldier surrounding me, all arms with silver weapons. Quite a pinch I was in.
"I'll show you why your soldier had fallen, [Earth Burst]" at their feet, the earth jumps at them as if it had explode. Those who react fast enough had stab the ground with their weapons, hindering my spell. "You idiots, don't use your weapons!" Looks like only the commander is the smart one around. With that one second gap that they put to lay down their weapons instead of dodging, I gave them a taste of how it felt like having your head going to explode.
            [Wind, scream!]
A high pitch sound explode I arrange next to their ear. If I had to compare, it would be as horrible as nails screeching on a chalkboard. Hearing that next to your ear surely will suffocate anyone's mind. In that time, there were chances I could take to runaway, but instead, I rushed toward the commander-like person. That guy will surely get in my way if I tried running away. Take out the head and the body won't move is what Master always remind me.
"Do you think it'll be that easy Witch!" He aimed his sword at me, and I was about to parry it when an arrow hits my arm and stuck into it. I glanced at my side, there was a shadow of a man hiding inside the carriage, aiming at me from the gaps. I fumbled down trying to dodge the sword attack at the last minute, but he was able to graze my upper arm in the end.
I flip the carriage away with another wind spell without giving myself in with the pain. I turn my attention back to my opponent and found myself gazing at the tip of his sword. His men were already up and stood around me and him as the center. "This will be as far as you go"
"Do you think so? Because luck usually ran in my way."
"Trying to act tough? No matter, once we've tied you to the stake, you would think how lucky you could be free from this world."
I bit my lip unwillingly as I desperately thought how to escape. I still have my magic stone at the small bag hanging on my waist. As long as they haven't took that, I can still make it out. "You, strip her belongings!" The commander ordered. I count the distance and time until he was close enough for me to make a grab at him and use him as hostage.
Just when he's in the right place, I turned toward him but then I gasped at the sight in front of me. The man's face went blue and he was grasping his neck as if strangling himself. Soon, the others followed and they all were grabbing their neck and chest. I soon realized the peculiar flow of mana coming out of them, it was a simple spell that controls the flow of air, but someone had used it to take out the air in their lungs, leaving them nothing to breath.
Their eyes rolled behind and fluids were coming out of their mouth. I channeled my own mana and disrupt the spell, canceling them in the process.
"I don't know who you are, but you've gone too far, you could've killed them!" I called out toward the forest, not knowing where s/he could've hidden themselves. A gust of wind blew the leaves around, blocking my view, but I was sure I made eye contact with someone. Dressed in dark blue and his grey eyes were looking at me through his owl mask. He was already gone when I closed my eyes for a second and without waiting for the soldiers to wake up, I bail.

"I'm back"
I went inside the wooden cottage that I called home. The usual sight greeted me, from the gap if his room door, Master was fiddling with ingredients and chemical substances making who knows what. Lise was cooking dinner for the three of us, from the alluring smell, I could tell she was cooking beef stew.
"Did Adele came back earlier today as well?"
"Yes she did, even though stew is her favorite, I'm sure she felt bad not staying for dinner."
"I'm sure she is, for now let's eat because I'm starving!"
I sat down beside the table and noticed Lise was looking at me with a worried expression. She was eyeing at my right arm, I had covered it with a cloth and since I was wearing a robe, I thought I hid it pretty well. "Are you still doing that, look you're injured!" She whispered.
"Luckily it's nothing serious, besides you can't expect me to stop after going this far"
"So you're saying you're going to keep lying to Master Rolex?"
"At least until a year later, that way he won't complained much once I'm an adult."
Lise couldn't help but sigh at my reason, but should she be worried this much? I've been doing it for 3 years now and there was never a time I regret my action.
             "Claudia, get over here!"
I jumped for a moment hearing his voice all of a sudden, but immediately after calming my heart I rushed toward his side. "Master, what is it, do you need something?"
"As a matter of fact I do, go to the city and get these ingredients will you?"
"At this late of night, you want a girl taking care of your errands?"
"The sun had just set and I didn't waste 6 years raising a weak girl so don't make excuses and go!"
Without being able to talk back, I took the note he offered and went out to the usual market. By foot, it would take three days by foot reaching the city, but that's one of the good thing being a witch, distance is never a problem.
I went to the side of the cottage that has a drawing of a magic circle. I poured my mana in and the wall lost its feeling as the space around it distort. I went through it and appeared at a nearby hill where the city was visible on top. There were signs of light flickering, the bustling were gradually calming down as people went back to their home after a day's good work.
I arrived at the city while slipping through the guards. I walked carefully under the dark shadow of the night, not letting my presence known. I then turned to a corner where there was a dead end. I put mana on my hand to the brick wall and softly whispered, [We meet at dark].
A faint light appeared at the wall which spread through the cracks, forming a pattern. I lost my footing from the earth that disappeared under me and I fell deep down. However, with a simple chant, I began to slowly float down. The dark scene in front of me soon changed to that of an underground alley, filled with bustling people as if it were day, small round lights floated everywhere in this place surrounded by most and rocks, and what calmed me down the most was the fact they were sorcerers like me.
That' why we call this the 'Night Alley' where sorcerers would usually buy tools and ingredients at the time where mortal would be asleep.
I look again at the list of ingredients Master had made me to buy. "Geh, what's with all the rare stuff? Do you think we have the money for all this, you stupid Master?" Somehow, I ended up getting mad at the list, since I've come this far, there's no harm buying what you could buy.
"Mister, I'll take these three kinds of herbs, including this breed of snake molt you have. Also, this cocoa as well"
"Right away miss! You seen to be collecting some rare stuff, are you interested in some rare bones, it's the tusk of an elephant and you can't get this baby anywhere else. You should buy it while it is still in stock."
"Thanks, though I'm interested, I don't need it that much."
I was about to turned away to look for the next item when a flyer caught my interest. The flyer had the picture of a familiar owl drawn in mosaic, it was brown but it's eyelashes were a mixed of pink, blue and yellow, and its eyes were grey. Below it, was a map outskirt of the city and below the red dot indicating the place, it was written in bright red.
            WE WILL RISE!
There was a feeling in my heart that I shouldn't go there, but curiosity got the best of me. Not knowing my fate took an unimaginable turn.
